CORRESPONDENCE.
(To the Editor). Sir, —Being a stranger in this town, I am, as most strangers are, a little curious, especially so at the announce'ment in your paper to the effect that the Masterton Borough ' Council had accepted the tender of Messrs Lucas Bros., of Christchurch, for the erection of a gas-holder at the Masterton gasworks, at the tendered price of £640, in preference* to, the Masterton Implement Company's tender for £642 Bs. As you will see, the difference is only a matter of £2 Bs, and I think it seems very queer that your local body should send the money out of Masterton, and not keep it circulating in their own town, thereby giving the tradespeople the benefit to a certain extent. Of course the Council may have certain motives in placing the contract with outsiders, but I certainly think the ratepayers should have an explanation as to the why's and wherefore's of such an action.— Yours, etc., E. J. HALLETT.
