He was crossing a road oh horseback with the mails, the. road being covered to a depth of six feet by a rushing flood bf water, when half-way across the horse was carried away and the mails washed out to sea. Deverell clung to a barbed wire fence, and crept along it, reaching dry land in an exhausted condition with lacerated hands. "••■>
