RACING. MARTINBOROUGH RACES. FIRST DAY. (Special Reporter.) The annual meeting of the Lower Valley Jockey Club was commenced at Martinborough, yesterday, in favourable weather. The sum of £3,212 was put through the totalisator, as against £4,233 for ,the corresponding day last year, being a decrease of £1,021. Mr T. F. Evans, assisted by an energetic body of stewards, had all the arrangements for*the meeting well in hand. It is evident that the Government are making some effort, to suppress gambling. Yesterday it was found impossible to open the Telegraph Office .at Martinborough in order to wire the acceptances for the second day to morning newspapers. The Manager of the Press Association writes as follows:—"The Government intend to enforce their new rule not to open offices for acceptances, which they consider are required for betting purposes only."
