! THE FEDERAL ELECTIONS. SYDNEY, December 14. The bulk of the election returns are as yet incomplete. The absentee vote introduces considerable delay in reaohiag finality. Mr West, a comparatively unknown man, polled heavily in the Socialist interest at East Sydney against Mr Reid. The latter obtained 7,054, and Mr West 5,856. Both Mr Chapman «nd Sir William Lyne had overwhelming majorities. In Victoria Mr Deakin polled 12,903 against Mr Soullin's 6,420 at Ballaral, With further unimportant returns to come. Sir John Quick had a tussle with the Sooialist oaudidate, Mr T. Glass, at Bendigo, securing the seat hy 500. At Oorio there was a st'-aight-out fight between a Ministerialist and an Anti-Socialist Mr Orouob, the Ministerialist, defeated Mr MoOay by 10,134 to 8,268. Both sat in the last Parliament. Mr Q. H. Wise, Ministerialist, baat Mr MoLean by 95, Analysing the new Senate, the Anti-Socialists cannot account for more than two majority. In the Lang Division Mr Juhnson, anti-Sooialißt, beat the Sooialist by 6,300. The Hon. Sydney Smith was defeated by Mr Garr, Sooialist, by 370, Mr Watkins, Sooialist, beat the anti-Socialist for Newcastle by over 6,000. Mr Watson, at South Sydney, polled 10,117 hgainst 7,880 by Mr Graham, Sooialist. Mr Barns ran well against Mr Hughes, a member of Mr Watson's Cabinet, at West Sydney. The voting was—Hughe-J 7,5125, Burns 6,014. The Anti Sooialist bunch for the Senate have a gap of 40,000 votes between them and the LabourSocialist ticket. At Melbourne Mr Maloney beat Mr Lormer, the Anti-Socialist, by 3,400. Mr "Ronald, Ministerial Sooialist, gave way to Mr Matthews, a Labour Sooialist, at Melbourne Ports. Mr Praser, Anti-Socialist, 164,883 votes, Mr MoColl, Anti-Socialist, 162,972. For Bourke, Mr Hume Cook beat the Sooialist by 2,500. In West. Australia three Socialists, with Mr Pearoe, an old member, ahead, have a strong lead for the Senate. Only one change took place in the members of the House of Representatives, Mr Hedges, Anti-Sooialist, replaoing Mr Carpenter, Labour-Socialist, for Fremantle. All the old members have returned to the House of Taa mania exuepfc Mr Cameron, AntiSooialist, who was defeated by Mr Atkins,| of the same party. In South Australia the sitting members were re-elected,,with the addition of Mr Livingston, at Mount Barker.
ANALYSIS OF THE VOTING. Received December 17, 1.9 a.m. SYDNEY, December 16. Analysis of the voting throughout the Commonwealth up to yesterday ehows that for the Senate the AntiSooialists polled 486,963 votes;, Labour Sorialiats, 387,821 votes; Socialists, 15,309 votes; Ministerialists, 138,003 votes. The voting for the House of Representatives shows that in New South Wales the Anti Sooialista polled 123,229 votes; La bour Socialists, 111,132 votes; Ministerialists, 33,795 votes. In Viotoria the Anti Socialists polled 114,597 votes; Labour Socialists, 108, 898 voteß; votes. In tne Anti-socialists polled 56,368 Voteß; Labour Sooialista, 16,446 votes; Ministerialists, 7,272 votes. In South Australia the Anti Socialists polled 19,030 yotas; Labour Socialists, 11,787 votes: Ministerialists, nil. In Tasmania the Anti-Sooialists polled '8,664 votes; Labour Socialists, 13,594 votes; Ministerialists, 6,573 votes. In Westralia the Anti-Socialists polled 13,065 votes; Labour Socialists, 24,699 votes; Ministerialists, 8,344 votes.
AUSTRAL WHEEL PACE. WON BY THOMAS. Peceived December 16, 8.46 p.m. MELBOURNE, Deo. 16. The Austral Wheel Race resulted: —H. «J. Thomas, 1; P., Hebir, 2; R, W. Morgan, 3. It was the best Austral ever seen. After six laps had been covered the baca markers drew up with ibe middle division. Thomas rode strongly. When the bell went H. B, ' Smith and W. Hendy led |aU along the baok stretch. Then Thomas closed on them, while Morgan, who had previously caught them, lea to the straight with Hehir close up. Halfway from home Thomas gave a great jump, and dashed away, winning by a length. Time, 3min 59aeo (which, is a record for the race). , RECORD CARGO OF TIMBER. SYDNEY, Deoeruber 14. The steamer Inverie, from Vancouver, brought a record cargo of timber three and a hulf million feet. WEST AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENT. PERTH, December 14. Parliament has been prorogued. SHIPPING. Prom a return prepared by the Government it £is found that four oompanies hold absolute leases of 12,965,543 acres, and by way of mortgage 6,8381,089 acres. The New Zealand; Loan and Mercantile Agency is one of f the comin the report. It holds absolutely 026,698 aores, and by way of mortgage 625,854 aores.
