A instance of the 'excessive freight obarged on certain goods by the Railway Department from Auckland to Rotorua is cited hy one of our local chemists (£ays the Hofc Lakes Chronicle]. He received an order for lib each of two different mineral acids, and sent to Auckland for them. The wholesale price of the acids totalled ,2s 6<J. Not being then aware of the height, the acids were retailed at ia 6J, the latter being considered sufficient to cover freight and,'allow a small profit. Some days afterwards he received a bill from the Railway Department for 4s ■ Gtl.. ..freight,, vary neßrly doable the cost price : of the acid, and had to pay it. By tha trans, action he lost exactly 2a 6d. Sly grog selling appears to bfc rampant at Utiku, a small settlement on the North Island Trunk railway. A correspondent of Taihape News whites:—"The merest tyro of a detective ooald not fail to maue a case in Utiku. The illicit trade is being conducted with unblushing effrontery; and ia one establishment one, inoets with what may be fairly described as the open bar. With regard to the storage o\ spirits some clever devices have been adopted. Cavities have been made in the walls, and the removal of an lining board leads to a mine of spirits. The landlord, with a view of preparing for the day of reckoning, makes a swinging profit on h.B sales.
