NEW YORK, November 24

The grand jury for the State of California indicted Eugene Sobmitz, a Labourite and' Mayor of San Franoisco, and Abe Ruef, the San Franoisco Boss.- on charges of extortion. Sobmitz was charged with obtaining sums of two hundred and three hundred sterling by threats of the withdrawal of saloon keepers' licenses. Sohmitz, who, in 1904, was an orchestra player, is now worth half a million sterling. The municipal authorities are accused of owning an "unspeakable den"' yielding profits in one year amounting to one hundred thousand sterling, the proprietors of o'.her dens having been ousted in orderto destroy competition. d
