MASTERTON ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY.

A SUCCESSFUL -CONCERT. For the last concert of ibeir third season the 'Maaterton Orchestral Society were " favoured with a. very large audience at trie Town Hall last evening. The concert waa probably the moat successful yet held by the Sooiety. The programme was an enjoyable one, and nearly Ml of the items were enoored. The Orchestra played spendidly tbrongbout, and their work showed a great improvement on previous concerts. The item, "Sir J'Etais Roi," waa perhaps the best interpreted piece on-jthe programme, the nuances of tempo being specially observed. The phrasing and the light -and shade throughout the piece were given special attention. The glockenspiel effect by Master S. Gongh was very fine in this item, and an Imperative enooie was demanded. The well known intermezzo from "Uavalleria Rusticana" "was quite a treat to listen to, it • being played with fine effect. The pizzicato, "Love Longing," was exceptionally well rendered, and was also enoored. The selection from ""Carmen" was fairly well rendered. The trombone solo "Toreador," Mas nicely played by Mr G. VV. Hutohinson. The waltz "Dolores" was played well, and the light and shade was again well marked. The last item by the Orchestra was a pretty Hungarian dance, "Czardas,*' which was much appreciated by the audience. Mr T. Rortgers' solo, "By the Fountain," was also much appreciated by the audience, who demanded an endore. Miss Kate Holloway, quite a young violiniste, showed maiked talent in her playing of a fantaisie from "11 Trovatore," Her encore .number was ''Shepherd's Song" from Henry VIII. Miss Holloway negotiated the many difficult passages Jn ber items in a manner that ■ showed careful study and training. She gives promise of becoming an exceptionally fine player. Mr J. F. Carr, who is the possessor of a splendid tenor voice, sang three songs with fine effect and each of bis items were encored. His three best songs were "Ob That We Two Were Maying," "I Know of Two Bright Eyes," and "Avouineen." The oonduotor, Mr J as. Candy, is deserving of a word a praise tor the manner in which the Orchestra played. It has been decided to repeat last •evening's programme in the Hos pital Ground* on Sunday nex:.
