A strike of slaughtermen has oo ourred at private freezing works at Footscray (a suburb of Melbourne), which are largely engaged in the export of frozen lamb. The men demand an advanoe uf 25 per cent, in wages. The strike is not supported by the union, and is in defiance uf the decision of the Wages Board.

Tho first innings of New South Wales closed !for 763 (Gregory 383, Blaxland 94). Queensland, in their seoond innings, made 316 (Hartigan 61, Simpson 59, Evans 43). New South Wales won by an innings and 302 runs. (The record score in a first-class match is held by A.;, 0. MacLaren, with 424, mado' match Lancashire v. Somerset in 189 E. The total by Charles Gregory for New' South Wales against Queensland ranks second, beating Clem Hill's 365 not out for South Australia against New South Wales at Adelaide in December, 1900. Tbe latter Is still tbe record in the Sheffield Shield competition. The record score In any match is that of A. E. J. Collins (a nephew of Dr. Collins, of Wellington), who totalled |528 not out for Clarke's House against North Town, at Clifton, iu 1899. The reoord soore in any matob fn the colonies is 566 by C. J.
