South, £250. The annual report of the Public Trust Office, which was laid on the' table of the House on Saturday by the Premier, states that a large increase of business in all branohes was done. In Wellington there had been a movement for some time to establish a naMonal memorial, and until the Government knew what was intended to be done of a practical nature, he was not in a position to state definitely , what would be done in the way of subsidy. At the Masterton Magistrate's Court, yesterday morning, before Mr T. Wagg, J.P., two first offenders were fined five shillings each, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment for having been drunk. Tin New Zealand bowlers played two matches at Adelaide, yesterday. In a match at Semaphore against the Western Suburbs New Zealand scored 114, and the Western Suburbs 69. At Norwood New Zealand beat the Eastern Suburbs by 124 to 68. Reports having been received at the Borough Council offices that certain residents allow their taps to run- indiscriminately and waste a considerable amount of water, the Borough Inspector iMr J. Cairns) is keeping a sharp look out for such offenders, and intends to strictly enforce the by laws relating to the using of water. The Ban Francisco mail steamer Sonoma arrived in Auckland, yesterday afternoon. The steamer left San Francisco at 2 p.m. on October stb, one day late, and allowing for an eigtbeen days run, shonld have arrived at Auckland on Ootober 2** rd. The Masterton portion of the mail will arriva by the last train from the North this evening. It has been decided by the congregation of the Masterton Presbyterian Church to name the church "Kncx Churob." Arrangements are being made for special services to be held OD either the second or third Sunday in December, when the "ohristening" will take place. The Rev. Dr. Gibb will conduct the servioes on the date appointed, and he will also deliver a lecture in the ohurcta on the following Monday evening. Mr Thos. Collie,' of Kaltoke, had been forged, tut accused denied it, saying thai it wast another A. Collie, whose whereabouts were unknown, who bHd endorsed the note. Accused reserved his defence, and was Quuimitted tor trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court in Wellington. Bail was allowed in nae surety of self of £IOO, and another of £SO. Mr C. A. Pownall appeared for the accused.
