EXPERIENCES OF A WAIRARAPA STATION HAND.
A charge of sly-grog selling was preferred at the Wellington Magistrate's Court, on Friday, before Dr A. MoArtuur, S.M., agaiust a coffee stall keeper named Wiiliam Kay. Ho was also jointly charged with John Davoy, alias Higaius, with having stolen £3l in noney from James lianlou. The informant deposed that ho oame to Wellington from ja station near Featherst.in ou Ootober 21st. He got locked out all night, and wont to Kay's coffee stall at the corner of Lambton Quay and Willis Street, and bad a oup of coffee with some whisky in it. Ue stayed about the stall uutil accused was going to remove it. During this time he must have spent £2 in shouting for people. Acoused told him to meet bira later in the day near the Public Library. He did so, and told Kay he felt tired, Kay suggested thut he shoula lay down in a chaff house near by. Wikess,. acting on the suggestion, laid down ana went to sleep. Before this Kay asked witness to give him his money to look afier. Witness did so, and, counting it out, louud it oor.sisteci of three ten-pound notes and two one pound notes. K*y wont away, and wben witness awoke from his , sleep he found hay sleeping in an adjoiniug hay shed. He woko him ' up and got from him the purse and monej. The stall at this fc:me was in a yard. Witness hiu some coffee, and remained about tbe stall ontil eoiue time in the aiiomocu. Subsequently Kay went a>«ay from the stall, and on returning with accused Davey,'requested witness to go for a walk. Witness did so, and went with them to a house in Howe Street, wheie Uacey livod. There they had some drink. Witness be--oame disgusted with tbe accused and left. When walking down the street Kay overtook him and bumped against Dim. Witness then miesed his purse from bis outside coat pocket, and asfced Kay to give it to him back. Kay ran off, but witness chased him and caught him. Then Davey came on the scene, and pulled Kay's hand out of his (Kay's) pocket. Alter both the acoused had fumbled about with their hands, Davey threw witness his empty purse. Witness replied: "What's the good of the purse wifch.out the money," and leaving the purse went and reported the matter to the police. At this 6tage the proceedings were adjourned until to-day. Each accused was granted bail in self £SO, and one surety of £SO.
