Ibe Mastert-Ji) Cricket Association's Senior Gap Competitions ootamenced on tne Park Oval yesterday afternoon. A light rain had talleo at intervals daring the mornIng, and this made the wiokets somewhat treaoherous. On No. 1 wioket Carlton met W.P.0.A., and on No. 2 wioket Star met Carterton. Pair totals were pat up, but one or two men In each team were responsible for the bulk of the scoring. T. Maunsell, captain of the Carterton team, won the toss from P. Riohards, who was elected captain of the Star team. The batting of the visitors was not brilliant. Lindop and Phelps were responsible for 39 oat Of the total of 81. Phelpß hit hard and often. His soore Included three foarers. Lindop played well. Mansell, Beeohey, and Hart were fiot rid of oheaply. Logan bowled splendidly, and repeatedly "etucK up" the batsmen. His average reads —overs 12.3, runs 33, wioketß 6. Chapman and McLean both bowled well. The former sent down some really good balls. The fielding of tne Star team was good, and a de« <jlded improvement on last season. Steward brought' off two good <ntobes, and P. Riohards one. The Star team oommenoed fairly well, bnt their "tail" forgot to wag. On the whole the batting was disappointing, and with the material that la in the team a bigger total should have been put up. Pice batsmen ■contributed 46 out of 52 runs made. Logan played nicely for his runs, v as did Bgan. Maunsell, bowled in fine style. His analysis readsovers 8; runs 23, wickets 5. Phelps pat op somewhat of a sensational performance, taking three wiokets for 0 runs. Flaying out time, Carterton, thanks mainly to the hard hitting of Williams, scored-29 for the loss of one wioket. Williams ,made 21 not oat. His score included four fourers. Maunsell made six before he was cleverly caught by P. Riohards.

The W.P.0. A. -Carlton match was remarkable tor the bud beginning each team made. W.F.C.A. won the toss, and Hall and Williams went in. The former faced Waters, bat the latter with bis third ball bowled Ball. Wbitfc filled the vacancy, buc the Carlton bowler got him with his fifth ball. Parton joined Williams. Parton scored a single each off Waters and Gongdon, then the former bowler got one past Williams. Three for 2. Scrimgeour and Parton carried the score to 14, when Congdon bowled Sarimgeoar, who had made 6. Pour for 14. B. Welch joined Parton, and she "rot" was stopped. The pair piled on the jnns in good style, Weloh being partlonlarly aggressive. Sixty was on the boar/1 before Welch was snapped up behind the wickets by 11. Weloh after compiling 21 by good oricket. fie gave one ohanoe. Parton lost Sohobert after the latter had made two. Dugarde did not stay long, fie Bcored two singles and a three, and then pat a ball from E. Weloh into O'Leary's hands. Mainly through Parton's efforts the score was taken to 86 before the innings closed. Parton, who shored 39 not out, played really good cricket for his runs, and gave a pleasing display. He gave a chance to Swan, off B. Weloh, at 3b, which was not accepted. E; Welch bowled well for Carlton, taking 4 wibkets for 14. Two easy chances off his bowing were dropped.' Waters 4 for 25 also bowled welK The fielding/of the team was excellent. Carlton started their innings wretohedly. Waters, Swan, F. Welch and O'Leary were out with the score at 8.. Fifteen was op When Darville and B. Boyd became associated. They hit out merrily, and put a different complexion on the game. Darville hit up two's and three's in great style, and 61 was on the board before Hall dissolved the partnership by cleverly catching Boyd off bis own bowling. W. K. Boyd assisted Darville to carry the score to 73, whob the latter was bowled by a good ball from Ball. The outgoing batsman hßd made 45 by clean hitting. His BCdre included five three's, one four and eight two's. The innings finally reached 80, Boyd making 10. The W.F.O. K. fielding was somewhat loose. Sohobert, however, did some particularly smart work, as did Hall. Hall was the most successful bowler,' 1 taking 6 wickets for 29: Williams-also, bowled well, taking 4 wickets for 19. Parton had 23 runs bit off him without taking a wicket. In their second innings W.F.C.A. have lost three wioket for 32. Parton made 18, while Williams is not out with 13 to his credit.
