CORRESPONDENCE.

—« — (To the Editor). Sir,—The deputation wbioh waited upon the Borough Council, on luesday evening, are deserving of the thanks of the business community for bringing before the Council's notice a work which will be of great advantage to the town. The making cf intersecting streets in the localities pointed out should have been undertaken long ago, and now that prominence has been given to the needed improvements, 1 trust that the Counoll will lose no time in taking the necesaary steps to secure the land requited. The longer a work of this description is let elide the more expensive it becomes to cany out in the end. In a year or two hence the proposition will be out of the question, for in a very short time, no doubt, the vacant sections now available will be built on in brick, and then, for all time, a much-needed work will be blocked, owing to the very heavy compensation which would have to be met. In a year or two the splendid new street just completed through the Renall Estate, and the one also through Cole's Estate, will be thiokly populated, for already most of the sections are sold, and numerous residences are in course of construction. The people who are building there are entitled to more convenient, entry into Queen Street, and the proposal submitted to the Council is the only one which can give them the benefit. Dixon Street, also, has the same claim, and apart from the benefits generally to the travelling public which the work would confer, It would mean the creation of .two more streets, wbioh would develop into business thoroughfares in a very short time; give the town a much more oompaot and solid appearance, and be of great advantage generally. The cost would at the present time be a very small item, as compared with the same proposal, say, ♦en years hence, and I trnst the Council will lock a little ahead of the present time, and carry out a work which daily is becoming more urgent.—l am, etc., PROGRESS. * '" -■
