The New Zealand bowlers opened 1 their campaign in New South Wales, | to-day, in a six rink match against the Northern District at Maitland. There was fine and cool weather, and a strong treezn blew across the green in the earlier half of the game. The visitois secured a fair lead, but the local men, playing a good game, wore them down, and made a close finish of it. McLaren's team, on No. 2 rink, played a capital game. The skipper out generalled his rival at every point. Payne also kept his men well in hand, finishing with a respectable margin, but the visitors on No. 3 rink went to pieces, and on No. C play for the major part of the game was very indifferent. The following were the scores:— No.® 1 Riuk Akhurst, Scott, Waddell, Wheeler (skip), 20; Northern District, 18. No. 2 Rink Durie, Buchanan, Osmond, McLaren (skip), 31; Northern District, 23. No. 3 Rink Bastings, Short, Keast, Sneddon (skip), 19; Northern District, 30. Nc. 4 Rink Lefevre, Clark, Rankin, Gardner (skip), 26; Northern District, 22.
