WELLINGTON, Ootober 15.
A deputation from the Chamber of Commerce waited on the Premier to-day, and urged the necessity for improvement in the ouean mail services.
Sir J. G. Ward said ho recognised that the present services were inadequate. In addition to the San Francisco service the colony should have the Vancouver service as wellas a weekly service via Australia. In oonneot/on with the last-named be bad been in communication with the Union Company, and the Huddart Parker Company, to induce them to despatch boats on a Friday instead of a Saturday, but although the Companies had reduced the original demands for suoh a service they were not yet reasonable enough, and negotiations were still in progress. The San Francisco servioe proprietary had in view the building of three large steamers to replace the present ones, and give improved service, and although no progress bad been made with the Vancouver ■ service negotiations there was a prospect of improvement in our ouean mail services on the lines indicated at no distant date. He had made an effort to secure a connection with the new Federal service from Adelaide, but had not been successful.
