RAID ON A GAMING HOUSE.
In an upstairs room of a house at the corner of Edward and Herbert streets (near Manners Street), Wellington, 25 men were on Saturday evening eujoying themselves, when a door at the back of the room, which could only be approached by the lift-shaft, was thrown open and two peared. The inmates unlocked the other door, and rushed helter-skelter down the stairs. They lost no time in unlocking the outside door. As they opened it they found themselves face to face with another party of detectives. All 25 men were arrested, charged with illegal gam-ing—hazard-playing. The arresting party consisted of Chief-Detective Mcurafch, a police iDspeotor, and four other detectives. Two of the party, having obtained a key that Stted the look of tbe baok-door nad gained entrance, and reached the upper floor by means of the lift. The door from the lift was bolted, but there was a hole in the door enabling the bolt to be lifted from the outside. The bolt was lifted, and the surprise party enteied. The 25 men were brought /before Dr. Mo Arthur, S.M., yesterday. The two principals, Arthur Rawaon and James Reigal, were each fined £lO, in default one month'simprisonment. Each of the othir 23 were fined £3, the alternative being 14 days in gaol.
