WASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ORDINARy MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor presided, and there were also present—Crs E. MoEwen, E. Feist, J. 0. Ewington, W. Morris, T. G. Hoar, P. W. Temple, J. Elliott, and E. G. Etcn. An apology for absence was received from Or J. H. Pauling. Mr J. Rixon wrote stating that be would withdraw his offer of land for the extension of Michael Street within fourteen days from the 18th inst. unless the Council promised to move in the matter.—The Mayor said he bad arranged to adjourn the present meeting until Thursday, at 7.30 p.m., when the question of street widening would be considered. Mr P. C. Jorgensen, second butcher at the Borough abattoir, wrote applying for an increase in wages. The Manager of the abattoir wrote stating that Jorgensen was a good man,, and his request did not seem unreasonable.—On the motion of Or Ewington, seconded by Cr MoEwen, an increase of fire shillings per week was granted. A petition was received from four ratepayers of Manaia asking the Council to re-oonsider the application made by Mr Jan. Cavanagh for an extension of time in connection with his contract on Junction Road. Owing to the bad weather and the state of the road the petitioners thought it was impossible for htm to complete the contract in the time specified.—The matter was referred to the Engineer. Mr A. P. L. Samson wrote applying for the transfer of a billiard room "license from Mr H. Fraser to himself. Mr Fraser also wrote asking that tne license be transferred to Mr Samson.—The application was granted. Mr L. Devonporl;, carter, wrote applying for an increase of wages. He considered that 12s per 3ay for himself, horse and cart, was not adequate considering the number of days ho lust through wet weather. A motion by Or Hoar, that the wagea be increased to 14s per day was lost by six votes to three votes. Or MoEwen stated that the River and Nursery Roads were in a very bad condition and on his motion the Engineer was instructed to proceed with the spending of the money authorised on the loan sohedule for improving the road. Or Temple drew attention to the large amount of rates outstanding. The Mayor said he would see that a list of the defaulting ratepayers waa furnished to the Council at the next oommittee meeting.
