EKETAHUNA.
DESIROUS OF BEING CONSTITUTED A BOROUGH.
Eketahuua is desirous of being constituted a borough, and to that end ha 9 preseutod a petition to Parliament, and Mr Hogg has introduced a Bill to give effeot to the desiro. Tbo petition says that the township, being rho centre of a large agricultural district of small farms, is destined to become a nJace of considerable importance. The population of the surrounding district, of which Eketahuua is the centra, is approximately 4,500. During the past few years the growth of the township has been very rapid. The population of the area proposed to be included in a borough is over 750, being an increase of about 350 since 1901 census. The result of the rapid increase of population has been to make parts of the town congested and a menace to health. The Publi Health Officers are strongly urging the immediate installation of a vat supply, drainage system and septic tank. In tne interests of the towu and of the district generally other improvements are urgently needed, but no steps in this directiou can be made under the provisions of tbe Town Districts Acts, owing to the restrictions as to borrowing
