NEWMAN.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Thursday. The ordinary meeting of the Newman School Committee was held on Wednesday evening. PresentMessrs Calton (chair), Fredricksen, (Seoty), Cooper, Gyde, McManus, Keam and Sy versen. Correspondence was received from tbeAramaboSohool Committee regarding the uniformity of school books. It was decided to support the Committee in their efforts to obtain a standard school hook. It was derided to hold a concert about the end of the present month. A hearty vote of thanks was pasosed to Miss Halley for the great interest she took in the .children whilst doing relieving work at the Newman Bchool. One account was passed for payment. The attendance for the month was as follows:—Daily average boys 37; girls 23; total 60. Average for month, boys, 30.; girls, 19; total 49. The local creamery opened for the season last Monday. - Court Makakhi A.O.F. held a special meeting on Tuesday evening last. The following officers were present-J-O.R. Bro. V. Anderson; S.C.K. Bro. Doyle; S.W. Bro. Bedding; J.W. Bro. Fauvel, S.B. Bio. Greathead; J.B. Bro. Wallace; Secretary Bro. Wioe; Treasurer, Bro. Doyle. About 40 members were present. Bro. Putter, (Court Prince of Wales, No 3196, Melbourne), and Bro. Holmes, (Court Pioneer, Tinui) were also present. The visiting members were awarded a "Foresters' Fire," to which Bro. Potter warmly responded. Three new members were initiated and received a lodge welcome. Four new members were proposed. A number of songs and recitations were rendered during the evening and refreshments were handed round. The Newman Hall Committee hold a "long night" dance last Thursday whioh proved a great success. Visitors were present from all round the district. Mr T. Keam was M.C. The catering waa in the hands of Messrs-McGarry Bros of the Star Bakeryi and Kefreshment Rooms, and they are to be congratulated on the excellent supper provided.
