MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
ORDINARY MEETING.
The ordinary meeting of the Masterfcon Borough Council was held last evening. Or Feist occupied the ohair in the absence of the Mayoi, and there were also present—Ors J. H. Pauling, J. Elliott, h\ W. Ternpie, T. G. Hoar, W. Morris, E. Q. Eton, J. 0. Ewington, and E. MoEweu. Messrs J. Coradine and E. J. Rose waited on the Oounoil, and stated that they had applied to the Borough Engineer for a permit to erect a granary in wood or iron for th° W.F.G.A., near the railway station, and had beon refused, the engineer contending that the by-laws as they stood would not allow of the premises being erected. The deputation pointed out that the ooutraet bad been signed on July 16th, when the present by-laws were not in force, and that the timber was on the ground. The Engineer contended that a granary wap a "business premises," and, as suoh, required to be built in brick. If the permit were grunted in this case, it would establish a precedent and govern all future oases.
The Council were generally of the opinion that a granary could not be considered a "business premises"; it was simply a storage for grain. ' It was fiually decided to grant a permit for the building. It was decided that the By-law Committee be instructed to report on , the definition of a "business premises" as mentioned in the by-law'. Mr J. Kavanagh wrote applying for an extension of two months in tbe time for the completion of his /contraot, viz., forming and metall- > ing the south boundary road. The appUoatiou was refused. Mr D. J. Cameron, Upper Plain, wrote applying to have his house connected with the high-pressure water supply. He asked for a three-quarter-inch pine or a smaller one. The application was granted on the usuai conditions. Crs Feist, Temple, Ewiugton and Eton were appointed a committee to revise the schedule of prices for water supplied to residents outside the borough. The Secretary of the Masterton Hospital Trustees wrote applying to have the new Hospital site connected with the Borough higb-pressure water supply. The application was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. Messrs Kobinson and Robinson, solicitors, instructed by Messrs F. A. and B. J. Jackson, wrote asking the Council to take into consideration the question of forming the street connecting Bannister Street with Worksop Road, being the street immediately on the town side of Colombo Road. The, letter was referred to the Works Committee. Ibe Engineer reported on the question of providing water at the abattoir. He recommended that a two-inch pipe be sunk to a depth of 10 feet in the present well, if necessary. The recommendation was adopted. Crs Stoo and MoEwen were appointed a committee to sign all uontraots. Four tenders were received for the supply of gas pipes ana water pipes. Consideration of the tenders was deferred until a speoial meeting to be held to-night.
