News has been received that the French ship Vauban, travelling from the United States to Hobart for orders, 1 was totally wreaked on the Newfoundland coast. The members of the crew were rescued. THE DEFENCE OF THE COMMONWEALTH. Received August 27, 11,47 p.m. MELBOURNE, August 27. The Minister of Defense has appointed a comtrittee, consisting of the State naval ~and military commandants and other leading offloers, to reportjrespectively on the naval and military seotiona of the Imperial Defence Committee's report. The committees are instructed to submit a complete scheme for the defence of the Commonwealth, how it differs from the Imperial scheme, and the difference of cost. RACING. Jim Dorset, Solution and Magazine are equal favourites for the Epsom Handicap at 100 to 8, while Solution is nominal favourite for the Metropolitan Handioan at 100 to 8. Maniapoto is quuted at 7 to 1. EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS. Received August 28, 1.7 a. m, SYDNEY, August 27. The steamer Tambo, wbioh has arrived from the New, Hebrides, reports that on August 2nd, a fairly I severe earthquake shock was experienced in the island of Tannu. A couple of weeks later a shook was felt at Anectyumn. Though of short duration the earthquake caused alarm.
