IMPROVED FARM SETTLEMENTS.
OROWN LANDS COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The following reference to improved farm'settlements is contained in the annual report to Parliament of Mr John Strauohon, Commissioner of Crown Lands: Masterton-Tinui Improved Farm Settlement.—The number of sections now under occupation is 11, aggregating, 065 acres, and the total population is 62. In all, the stock numbers 1,330 head: and 887 acres have been felled and grassed. Tbe improvements are valued at £4481 and the settlers have teen assisted by the Government to the extent of £847. The selectors use their holdings for dairying and grazing purposes. They are all prosperous, and tbe success of the settlement is thoroughly established. Akitio Improved Farm Settlement. —Thirty-six sections, aggregating 3,810K aores, areoooupied, the total population being 94 souls. 3,143 aores are felled and 3,038 aores are grassed. The total value of improvements effected is £8,974 5s 2d, whioh includes £3,690 advanced by the Government to assist the settlers. The stock carried on tbe land consists of 3,201 head of all kinds. Tbe progress made during the year is satisfactory,} and the settlers are becoming more prosperoup, owing to better road access and higher prices ruling for stock and produce. Maugatiti Improved Farm Settlement.—There are 24 sections occupied," of a total area of 3,164 aores, and having a population of 95 souls. 2,626 aores are felled, and i! -.559 acres are grassed, the total value of improvements effeuted being £7,829 including] £3,309 advanced by tbe Government. Tne live stock running on the land consists of 53 horses, 8&7 cattle, 905 sheep, and 109 pigs. Some of the selectors suoply looal creameries, bat the majority spend their time between their seotions and Government roadworks. The progress made is satisfactory, and owing to better road aooess and higher prices ruling, the selectors are becoming more prosperous.
