STATE FORESTS.
WELLINGTON DISTRICT. Some 45" State forests in the Wellington district contain 938,951 aores of land set apart under the provisions for the Act, says the Un-der-Secretary of Lands in his annual report With *he exception of a few aores in the outskirts, the whole of this larae reserve is atill iu its natural state, and contains great quantities of valunble milling timber, though f"r want of easy access a large proportion cannot be utilised for that purpose for many years to come. About J3,600,000 superficial feet hBB been of to sawmillers and otherß, and fires have swept through the bush on about 3,000 aores, thereby destroying the forest growing on the land, but with this inconsiderable exoeption the forest reserves are untouohed. No reforestation has yet been carried out in the Wellington Distriot, and as much of the present reservation is unlikely to be needed for settlement requirements, fcbut jj is admirably adapted for climafjio and sceuio purposes, it is probable that tree-planting ou a large scale will be unnecessary for a long time to oome.
