ladies' championship MEETING,

Tbe ladies' golf championship meeting was continued at the Shirley links, Obristahurch, on Wednesday, when the third round was played. The weather continued fine, and an enjoyable time was .spent by competitors and spectators. The leading players are now drawing together. Some very fine play was witnessed during the round. Considerable interest was taken in tbe match between Miss G. Gorrie, of Auckland, and Mrs Bidwill, of Wairarapa. Those who expeoted a keen struggle were not disappointed, for at the eighteenth hole the two were ail square, and it was not till the twentieth that Mrs Bidwill established a lead and seoured a victory by 1 up. Miss Wilson, of Christchurch, beat Mrs Wilder, also of Christchuroh, rather easily by 4 up and 2. Miss Mendelson, of Timaru, defeated Mrs Cleghorn, of Wanganui, 4 up and 2. Another good match was that hetween Miss Cave, of Wangaoui, and Mies Scott, of Dunedin, won by the former by 2 up. On Tuesday afternoon a handicap Bogey Matoh was played, which was won by Mrs Bidwill, sor,, 2 up. Mis Bidwill, moveover, played the eighteen holes in 93 strobes, whicji is a record for the Shirley Links, so far as lady players are concerned. The previous record was 94, made by Mrs Guy Williams, two years ago. In the second round of the chan.piunsbip, Mrs Bidwill, Wairarapa, beat Miss Nora Campheli, Christchurch, 1 up. Miss Campbell led off with a goo 3 drive, and Mrs Bidwill, in her second shot, got into the bunker, and having piayed two without getting clear she gave up the bole. The next hole was won by Mrs Bidwill in 5. At the third bole Mrs Bidwill drove her thiid into the bunker. Miss Campbell, in her third, reached the green, and holed out in 5. Indifferent play followed at the fourth hole, which waa halved in 6. Burnside was halved in 4, each competitor playing well. Mrs Bidwill won the sixth hol« in 6, aud the seventh and eighth in 6. At the niu'h hole Miss Campbell was 1 up; the tenth was halved in 4, and at the eleventh Mrs Bidwill drove into, the bunker, and finally gave up the hole. The two following tries were won by Mrs Bidwill in 7, and tho players were then all square. After some olose play Miss Campbell lout the match at the eighteenth hole by driving her ball into tbe creek.

PROPOSED EXHIBITION TOURNAMENT.

OHIiISTOHUKOH, August 23. The Ohristohurch Golf Olub has been in communication with the Governnent relative to the granting of a Bubdidy in connection with a proposal to hold a tournament during the Exhibition season. A reply has been received to the effect that the Government will give the matter favourable consideration. The tournament, if held, will comprise events for men and ladies, and will take place at the Shirley links at Easter time.
