The Chief Inspector of Factories, under instructions from the Labour Department, made a round of inspection amongst the principal groceries in Wellington, to ascertain if shorr-weigbted butter was being systematiually sold. Altogether 1251bs of gutter >ere tested, and, on the whole, phpre was only an average shortage of three-quarters of an ounce. Thia shorcage may be due to evaporation. If the butter was fresh from the factory, it might be found that the difference was the other way. Amongst legislative possibilities of the oomiug session is the Bill embodying the means of effecting a ohange in the Legislative Gouuoil. According to report, a Bill has been prepared under wbioh members of the Upper House will' in future be elected by the House of Representatives. So far as can be learaed, the new Government has not yet recommended tiny one for appointment to the Legislative Council, and this lends colour to the rumour above quoted. It is known in political circles that the late Mr Seddou intended to elevate several gentlemen to the o°unoil, and at least one ex-councillor was to have been re-appointed. The question of reform of the counoil has been under discussion during ttie past three years.
