MASTERTON GASWORKS.

MANAGER'S MONTHLY REPORT

The Manager of the Maaterton Gasworks reported to the meeting of the Borough Works Oommittee, last evening, that the amount of gas manufactured for the month of July was 1,670,300 oubio feet, as com pared with 1,465,600 oubio feet manufactured in July, 1905, being an increase of 204,700 oubio feet. The amount of gas sold during last month snowed an increase of 104,600 dubio feet over that sold ia the corresponding month of 1905. For every ton of ooal used during last month there bad been 10,300 cubic feet of gas made. The revenue for the month amounted to £631 18s Id. During the month eleven new services had been laid, eight new meters fixed, and two old supplies re-oonneoted. A main nad been laid down from the inter seotion of Worksop Road along Oolnmba Road to a poiot opposite Mr lorns' residence od the other side of tLe Makora Creek—a distance of about 28 chains. The estimated" cost of that main was £49 10s, and the actual cost including servioes had been £45 16s lid. There were now six consumers using gas from that main with another application in hand. Services have been laid, and aro lamps fitted to two lamps at Lansdowoe for the Masterton County Council. Servioes bad also been laid to seven of the new lamps, authorised by the Oounoil, and as soon as the lampheads were available the necessary burners would be fitted. In oonneoticn with complaints made by consumers, he had found that many services, notably those supplying distant residents, had been badly laid with the result that they were constantly getting waterlogged. Repairs bad been effected to those mains, and there was not likely to be any further complaints from the consumers in question. The manufacturing plant was in good order. The coat of repairing the old retort house would not exceed £25, using galvanized iron instead of the present slates. It would be necessary to consider the re-setting of one if not of both of the arches in the old house in readiness for the probable increase of consumption next year. The Wescport ooal (small) that had been supplied lately had given a lot of trouble, owing to the continued choking'of the ascension, and bridge pipes with pitch. To do away with this trouble the manager suggested that six more "Woodall" combined ascension and bridge pipes be procured, and tne loss of gas would then be reduced to a minimum. The want of storage for tar is becoming an urgent matter. There is now over 10,000 gallons of tar in stook, and all possible storage is fully occupied. If tne Council could proceed with asphalting it would relieve the congestion and obviato the immediate necessity for providing an additional tar well. Tbo matter of roofing the retort house was left in the hands of the Manager.

The question of a show-room for gas fittings was referred to the Committee already appointed to deal with the matter. It was decided to purchase six more new ascension pir.es, as leoommended by the Manager. It wbb decided to hold over the question of providing for additional storage for tar at the works until next meeting, when the Manager will submit a scheme. The report was adopted.
