The Masterton Orchestral Society will give their next concert in the Town Hall on Tuesday, August 28th. The colonial mails which left Melbourne on July 11 th, per K.M.S. M the PalmerstoD North Police Court, yesterday morning, John Whelfcn, charged on remand with grieviously assaulting Patriok Ashe, at Awahuri, on August stb, was further remanded, on the application of the police, until 22nd inst. It was stated that the unfortunate victim of the assault, who is 73, is quite unable to attend court. He is still in the hospital and hia condition is serious.

Applications to sell or exhibit for sale meat in the Borough of Masterton under the "Sale of Meat By-law, 1906," were made to the meeting of the Masterton Borough Works Committee, last evening, by the following butchers :~R. W. J. Elley, Montgomery and Co., A. Rebay, Staples and Co., Ogilvy and Sons, A, Stempa, Morris and Sons. The applications were graoted, subject to the approval of the abattoir manager.

A fatal accident occurred at Tamak', on Monday, afternoon, by which a young man named William Hansen, aged 30, lost his life. Deceraed was an engine driver by trade, and went out to Irvine's Tatuaki mill in search of work. While riding back on a trolley, one of the logs slipped, throwing him to the ground, and, rolling on top of him, crushed his thigh" and lower part of the abdomen to a pulp. The man was removed to the hospital at once, where he died last night. Deceased leaves a widow and one ohild.

A correspondent writes:—-The late Captain Pringle, when a lieutenant in the Heretannga Mounted .Infantry, was looked upon as the most daring rider in the oorps. He would ride any wfaare and over anything. He was also a magnificent swimmer, and one notable feat was his diving for the body of a man who bad been accidentally drowned in the flutt River, the water being as thick as pea soup. On another occasion he swam the Hafct River while it was in flood in order to resoue a settler, whcse house bad been washed away daring the flood.

The attitude of the Premier towards the question of tenders for a steam service between South Africa and New Zealand has given a good deal of satisfaction in ' Dunedin, writes a correspondent. Sir Joseph Ward said that tbe needs of the colony could ta fairly met by the service which the Tyser Company bad decided to establish. This is interpreted in Dunedin to mean that legitimate shipping enterprises will not in future be made the subject of unnecessary State interference, and that important shipping interests are not in peril of being made political playthings.

A claim for £4OO damages *and specific performance of a contract was begun before the Ohief Justioe in the Wellington Supreme Court, yesterday, says the Post. Ihe plaintiff is Herbert Franois, of the Wairarapa, and the defendant is Rudolph W. Becker, of Petone. The dispute arose out of negotiations for exchange and purchase of lands whiah took place between the parties in March last, as" a result of which it was arranged that the present defendant would acquire from plaintiff land in the Villa Home Estate, Masterton. The transaction was fixed up hurriedly, allegedly at tbe instanc of Franois.
