CENSUS RETURNS.
WELLINGTON, June 7,
The Registrar-General has issued a preliminary return, subje'ot to revision, showing the populaton of' the North, youth, and Stewart Islands and adjacent islets, and the inoieases made in the last twenty years. Tbe figures are as follow:—North Island: 1886, 250,482; 1896, 340,631; 1901, 390,5*71; 1906, 4:76,891. South Island: 1886, 327,592; 1896, 362,236; 1901, 381,661; 1906, 411,258. Stewart Island: 1886, 209; 1896, 252; 1901, 272; 1906, 288. A table showing the numerical inoreases made gives the following results: North Island; 1886-91 30,963; §lß9l-96. 59,176; 1896-01, 49,940; 1901-06, 86,320. South Island: 1886-91 17,119; 1891-96, 17,525; 1896-1901,19,425; 1901-1906, 25,597. Stewart Island: Decrease 1891-96, 50; 1896-01, 20; 1901-06, 16. The increase in the oeroentage in the eame periud is even more interesting as showing the remarkable advance made by the North Island : 1886-91, 12.36; 189196, 21.03; 1896-01, 14,66; 1901-06, 22.10. aouth Island: 1886-1891, $ 5.22; 1891-96, 5.08; 1896-1901, 5.36; 1901-1906, 7.75. Another table shows the distribution of the population and the proportion of the sexes as follows: ■ Counties, persons 458,57Q, (males 255,078, females 203,492); boroughs, 425,066 (males 211,633, females 213,433); islands adjaoent, 693 (males 402, females 291); Kermadeo Islands, 5 (males 3, females 2 ; on shipboard, 4,305 (males 3,939, females 366). Totals for the colony, 888,639 (males 471,055, females 417,584); North Island, 476,891 (males 254,997, fe'males '221,894); South sland, 411,258 (males 215,764, females 195,494); Stewart Island, 288 (males 177, females 111); Chatham Islands, 197 (ina'es 144, females 83); Kermadeo Islands 5, (males 3, females 2). These figures give the population flxolusive of Maoris aad annexed Pacific Islands but include halfcasfcea and Chinese.
