WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY.
FIRST AUSTRALIAN EXPERIMENT. Received July 13, 10.40 a.m. MELBOURNE, July 13. The first Australian experiment in wireless telegraphy was made between Queeuscliff and Devonport. A congratulatory message was successfully exchanged between the Governor General, the State Governor, and the Government of Tasmania. The Marconi system was used. THE LAND COMMISSION. STATEMENT BY MR OARRUTHERS. [Received July 13, 10.14 a.m. SYDNEY, July 13. Mr Oarrutners, in the course of a statement, said the Government felt its position acutely in connection with the Land Commission. The public mind waa heing inflamed, and there was a ciy for a victim and a demand for something to be done. The Premier added: "Thetrouble is vre are a law-abiding country, and nothing can be done except in aocordanoe with the law." THE WEATHER IN SYDNEY. Received July 13, 10.15 a.m. SYDNEY, July 13. Remarkably warm and dry weather continues. Yesterday was the hottest July day experienced f r 20 years. The temperature was 72deg. NEWCASTLE MINING DISPUTE. Received July 13, 10.15 a.m. g SYDNEY, July 13. There is a brighter outlook fur the coal-mining troubles in Newcastle. The fletton miners will resume at the old rates on Monday next. The Burwood miners have re« sumed. They will discuss the suspension of a miner, wbiah has oaused the present trouble.

The Phoenix foundary at Ballarat, which in the heyday of it's prosperity manufactured over £1,250,000 worth of looomotives and railway rolling stock, has been dosed down. The main cause of this is the withdrawal of locomotive construction by the Government, and also to their being no regular demand for mining mKohinery. THE DEFENCE OF THE COMMONWEALTH. Received July 13, 11.55 p.m. MELBOURNE, July 13. Mr Ueakin,'speaking iu the House of Representatives, intimated that he had reoeived the Imperial Defence Committee's reoommeudatious "for the defence of the Commonwealth. The dooumont was marked confidential. He had already called the attention of the Imperial authorities to this inconvenient praotico of marking despatches. He had now asked whether there was anything in the document in question that it was undesirable to make public. From a cursory inspection, he!thought that there was very little that 'could not be published.
