THE BIELOSTOK MASSACRE.
WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE?
(Per Mail Steamer at Auokland).
GRODNO, June 20. Owing to tbe refusal ot the censor at Bielostok to permit the free telegraphing of the result of the investigation by the associated press of the massacre of Jews there, its ooroonespondent came here, and supplies the following particulars of the ghastly tragedy:— Anti-Jewish rioting at Biblotsok is now ended. The troops are in full control, and in view of the outcry raised, it is certain tbat the authorities will not permit a renewal of the horrors recently witnessed at Bielostok. This entire region iB greatly excited owing to the fear that the Bielostok massacre was only a signal for a general attack on Jews throughout Pale and in Poland, but if any such conspiracy existed it is too late to carry out the plans, as the moat imperative orders to prevent further outbreaks have been issued to the Governors and Governor-Generals from St.. Petersburg. When tbe correspondent arrived at Bielostok on Sunday morning tbo worst was already over, but on all sides the-e were revolting evidences of savage bestiality on the part of the blood-drunken mobs, whioh sacked and burned tbe Jewish ( houses, shopa aud stores for seventy two hours, with a sliaht abatement. During the daytime the mad orgie of blood and pillage wont on unchecked. Ihe inhumanity displayed would hav* done ere Jit to the mongrel hordes • of Genghis Khan in his conquests of Chiva and Centra Asia early in the thirteenth century. At first the police and troops urged on the mob, but finally, when dismayed by tbe bloody deeds accomplished, they reluctantly sought :to put.an eud to tbe work of tbe rapacious bauds of roughs who were so far beyond the control of the local I forces tha f regiment after regiment j had to be thrown iuto the city beI fore order could be restored. During the rioting the Jews were [ hunted down by ferocious pursuers, I who in the majority of cases, were I not contented with killing their vie tims, but tore them to pieces like wild animals, and while this was ii progress the troops either stood idly by, or, as was more frequently the case, fired into the houses auu shops where Jews were ooncealed under the pretext tbat they believed them to be revolutionists, bur, really to make way for the murderers and plunderers, who followed in the soldiers' wake. While it is impossible to give the exact figures, the visits of the correspondent to tbe hospitals and cemeteries enabled him to approximate the killed at 100 Jews and 20 Christians, and tbe wounded at 150 Jews aud 7 Christians. The question of the origin of the massaore was carefully investigated. Accounts of impartial witnesses demonstrate that au insulting cry enraged the Jews, who attacked the religious procession. Then, from one end of the city to the other, the polioe sprend the report of the attauk, thus fanning tho religious fanaticism of Christians, and sotting loose the worst elements upon the Jews, on whom the crowds watching the procession had already turned. The Jews at fir-at fought with revolvers and bombs, aud with these weapons the majority of Christian victims were killed, but tbe Jews were soon overwhelmed, and fled for shelter.
