NEW SOUTH WALES LIQUOR BILL. A FAVOURABLE REPORT. Received July 5, 9 a.m. SYDNEY, July 5. The presideut of the New South Wales AUinnce, reviewing the first six months' operation of the new Liquor Bill, states that from nearly all quarters come reports of the sucoess of the Act. It has, according to the president, altered Sunday from a day of riot and excess to one of peace* and order. Convictions for Sunday drunken neES had been wonderfully reduced. TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES' GRIEVANCES. THE TROUBLE IN SYDNEY. AN ENQUIRY PROMISED. Received July 5, 8.52 a.m. SYDNEY, July 5. The Railway Commissioners have promised the fullest enquiry into the tramway grievances. n Last night's meeting of the Tram Employees' Union endorsed the action of thejexeoutrve, and granted ten shillings a day to Lawton, who was dismissed from the service, until his case is settled. It was also decided to petition Parliament to allow Lawton to appear before the of the House in reference to the men's grievances, and in support of ,tbe commission of enquiry. One of the sneakers said the men did not want to take extreme measures, but if the public did hot help them in getting a full enquiry, they would have ro use the power they had at their command. If they did that there would be a repetition of the Victorian railway strike. Received July 6, 1.5 a.m. SYDNEY, July 5. The men employed ou the night trams have endorsed the resolution adoped at last night's meeting. Otherwise there are no further developments, THE STOCKTON COLLIERY DISPUTE. Received July 5, 10.3 a.m. SYDNEY, July 5. The wheelers at the Stockton Colliery have declined the Miners' Union advice to resume work. The position at the other pits is unaltered. Owing to the trouble the price of coal in Melbourne is to be advanced 5s per ton. FEDERAL MAIL CONTRACT. Received July 5, 10.30 a.m. MELBOURNE, July 5. Mr Deakin, the Federal Premier, is still awaiting finality in the mail contract negotiations. NEW ZEALAND EXHIBITION, Received July 5, 10.30 a.m. SYDNEY, July 5. In order that the representation of New South Wales at Ifche ' New Zealand Exhibition may be as oomplete as possible, the Director of the Intelligence Department has widely communicated with manufacturers and others, urging on them the desirableness of being represented. ALLEGED FRAUD. Reoeived July 5, in.3o a.m. SYDNEY, July 5. Domeney, who alleged that be was the victim of a cowardly outrage at Molong, has been committed for trial on a charge of setting fire to his shop, and of an attempt to defraud. THE TOBACCO EMPLOYEES' STRIKE./ Reoeived July 5, 10.3 a.m. SYDNEY, Juno 5. One hundred and thirty tobacco workers are out. The secretary of the employees' union claims that there is an attempt on the pa:t of the combine to crush Unionism. . THE STRIKE CONTINUES. Received July G, 1.5 a.m. SYDNEY, July 5. The tobacco strike continues. | At a conference between the strikers and the management the latter refused to discharge the girls. The strikers have declined to resume work it they ar* retained. A meeting of the Tobacco Employees Union' will be held to-mor-row lo consider the situation. In the meantime the Tobacco Company state that plenty of labour is, offering to supply the place of strikers.
