MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY .MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Masterfcon School Committee was held last evening. There were presentMessrs R. Brown (chairman), H. O'Leary, G. Townsend, T. Dunoan, W. Gillespie, 0. Perry, J. Carpenter, W. [A. Fendall, and E. B. Waddington. The Treasurer reported a credit balaaoe at last meeting of £B7 2s lOd, and at date £69 lis. The Headmaster made aTrecommeadation that fourteen dozen supplementary readers be purchased for various standards at a cost of £l4 Ba. The matter was referred to the Finance Committee. On the motion of Mr Fendall, a committee, consisting of the Chairman and Messrs Carpenter, Perry and Fendall, was appointed to revise the Standing Ordeia of the Com- • mittee and report to a future meeting. The Headmaster reported as follows: Attendance. Main School: Roll, 667; average attendance, 605; percentage of attendance, 91. Side School: Roll, 174; average attendance, 152; percentage of attendance, 88. Secondary Classes: Roll, 72; average attendance, 68; preoentage of attendance, 94. The attendance for the month has been good. Ihe secondary department is maintaining an excellent percentage cf attendance. The accompanying absentee report contains no bad cases. The pupil teacher at the Side School has been absent for the last eight weeks, on account of illness, and lias been granted further leave of absence by the Board. The new furniture foe the secondary rooms and cookery rooms was fixed in the rooms during the term holiday, and is proving thoroughly satisfactory. I wish that the whole of the rooms at the school were equipped with similar modem desks and seats. A large famount of work has been done in the grounds in front of the school during the past month. The whole has been laid out in grass plots and flower beds. The water from [the roof of the school building is allowed to. disoharge directly on to the footpath on the west side of the school. I would suggest that a pipe be laid under the path and a bole dug to receive the water. At present children have sometimes to wade through this storm water.—With reference to the complaint that the water from the roof of tne school building is allowed to discharge directly on the footpath, mentioned in the Headmaster's report, the visiting members were instructed to attend to the matter. It was decided to invite alternate applications for the position of caretaker of either the Main or Side School or both. It was resolved to make application to the Education Board for the money that had been caid to ( the Board by the jTrusfc Lands Trust for the fencing of the agricultural instruction plot at the District High School.. " The visiting members are Messrs Fendall, Gillespie and O'Leary.
