SATURDAY'S MATCHES. ; Masterton 13, Carterton - ! 8. Rel Star I won by default from Greytown I. Greytown 11. 0, Masterton 11. 0. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. MASTEKTON v. CARTERTON. The Masterton and Carterton teams met on the Masterton Showgrounda on Saturday afternoon. The weather was beautiful, and the attendance of fiie publiu large. Tbo teams were as follow Masterton—Fall-back, Prendeville; threequarters, Millar, JBaker, J. O'Leary; five-eighth, P. O'Leary; half-back, Logan; forwards, Greenfield, (.Taylor, Duggan, Spackman, Ross, Lyall, Merchant, Mackellar, and Kinf. Carterton Full-back, Groube; tbreeqnarteis, Scfcllen, E. McKenzie, Thompson ; five-eighth. Crawley; half, E. Mason; forwards, Hurlwy, Rawlings, Cadwallader, F. Johnson A. Johnson, S. Maeon, H. MoKenzie, Henderson, and Crawley. Masterton won the toss, and Carterton kicked off. For the first few minutes play was confined to the , touch liue in the Masterton territory. The ball was sent over their line, and the home team forced down. The blacks then livened up aud got the ball into the visitors' territory. The latter, however, worked the ball down again. From a free kiou, for off-side play, F. Johnson kicked a splendid penalty goal. Carterton ••• 3 Masterton ••• 0 On the ball being kicked off again Masterton put in some good work. J. O'Leary got a free kick within close rangfe, but failed in his shot to put the ball between the uprights. ' From a scrum the ball was passed to P. O'Leary, who very neatly transferred to Millar. Carterton then attaoked, but Prendeville saved and followed up well, Groube,.of the Carterton team, was temporarily stunned, through reoeiving a kiok, and retired) but it was not long before he was able to take his place in the field again. J. O'Leary had a shot for goal from a mark, but the ball fell short. A fast follow up saw Lyall Eoore near the posts. J. O'Leaiy failed to oonvert. Masterton * .» 6 Carterton ••• 3 Carterton rushed the ball down the field, but J. O'Leary saved the ' situation and with a good kick found the touch line. Carterton repeatedly attaoked but J. O'Leary put in excellent work, and saved For the remainder of the spell play was fairly open, and the scores remained unaltered. Spackman kicked off for Masterton. The blacks attaoked for some time. Open play followed, and Masterton were shortly afterwards again on the attack, A fine piece of work by Logan, saw J. O'Leary soore a try alongside the goal posts. J. O'Leary failed to convert. Masterton Caytexton 3 Carterton then livened up, and worked the ball down towards the Masterton line. A good run by F. Johnson saw that player nearly score. Exoitlng play followed, and Masterton In their turn went very near scoring. The ball was then Bent up and down [the field. Car terton pressed the blacks hard. Within a few minutes of time Scallen, the Carterton three-quarter, broke away, and scored a fine try, which F. Johnßon converted. Masterton ... 9 Cartertpn ... 8 ■ No further soore resulted, and tho game ended in a win for Masterton by 9 points to 8. Tie Masterton team showed the best combination. Although there 8s only a difference of one |»oint tn the final seores, Masterton had the most opportunities and should have scored more than they did. The baoks won the match for Masterton. The Carterton forwards were superior to the Masterton pack in all departments of the game. J. O'Leary was undoubtedly the best back on the field, and his services were invaluable to his side. Millar, P. O'Leary and Logan also put in good work. Prendeville, at fullback,, was brilliant at times. Spackman, Ross, Maokellar 1 and King wero prominent amongst the forwards. For Carterton, Groube, Scallen and E. McKenzie were conspicuous among the baoks. Johnson Bros., H. McKenzie and Cadwallader worked bard in the forwards. Mr F. Hawke made an excellent referee, and Messrs K. Armstrong and H. Walker were line umpires. RED STAR v GREYTOWN. The Red Star-Grey town match, which was to % have been played on the Masterton Showgrounds on Satturdny afternoon, was won by the Stars by default, the Greytown team not putting in an appearance. JUNIOR MATCH. MASTERiON v. GREYTOWN. The Masterton and Greytown junior teams met at Greytowa on
