BANNISTER STREET.

A FOOTPATH WANTED.

DEPUTATION TO THE BOROUGH COUNOIL.

A petition was received at the meeting of the Masterton Jdorougb Council last evening, signed by 25 resident of Bannister Street, urging the formation and completion of the footpath on the north siae of that etree*;, extending fiora the property cf Messrs King, and Son to Colombo Boad. The petition stated that the present road would not only be impassable for pedestrians in winter, but it was also dangerous, as there was no means of escaping the traffic of bicycles and vehicles; thai, the work' was included in the schedule of works for which the Borough loan had been oariied, and that the land ip the vicinity was fast being built on, and as the traffic was increasing the formation of the footpatn was an argent work. A deputation consisting of seven residents of Bannister Street waited on the Council in support of the petition. Air A. Haughey, who spoke on behalf of the deputation, stated that all the residents of the street were unanimous that the work should be done. They considered that they had a right to demand that the present state of affairs should be improved. He pointed out the wretched condition of the street below the gasworks. Or Feist agreed with the deputation as to the necessity for the work being done, and moved that the work bo carried out at once. Cr Ewingfcon seconded the motion. The Mayor intimated that thi Council had already decided on what works should be carried out during the first year of the time over which the loan money was spread. The list had been closed, and to re-open it a notice of motion wan necossary. unless all the Councillors were unanimous that tho mutter should be considered then. Cr Morris opposed re-opening the loan sohedule, as he considered the Council Lad spent sufficient time considering the schedule already. Cr Feist gave notice to move at the next meeting tba't the loan schedule be re-openod, so as to allow of the question of forming a footpath in Bannister Street being considered. In thanking the Council on behalf of the deputation, Mr Haughey asked whether there would be any objection to the deputation attending every Council meeting until the work was carried out. Tho residents were bent on having the work done, and on keeping the matter before the Council. The Mayor replied that there •would be no objection, but they could not introduce the same matter every night, after onoe bringing it before the Council. He had no doubt that the Council would deal with the .matter fairly.
