Tbe Mast«rtou Reohabite Tent will meet to-night for initiations, nomination of officers, etc. The weekly meeting of St. Patrick's Club, which was to have been held this evening, has been postponed till next Tuesday evening. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Bohool Committee will be held on Thursday, June 14, at 7.30 p.m., in the Technical School. At the Masterton Folioe Court, yesterday morning, before Mr T. Duncan, J.P., a first offender was fined 5s for having been drunk. The monthly meeting of the Uoan!oil of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce will be held on Friday, at 3.30 p.m., in Messrs Abraham and Williams' farmers' room. A six-roomed house, on the Upper Plain Road, belonging to the Renall Estate, was burned down abcut 4.30 o'clock yesterday morning. The building was insured for £IOO in the State Office. The next "long night" dance in connection with the Band, Fire Brigade and Volunteer Assembly will be held in the Forester's Hall, on Thursday evening next. Refreshments will be provided by the ladies. Mails for the Commonwealth of Australia, Ceylon, India, China, Japan, Straits Settlements, also South Afrioa, Continent of Europe and United Kingdom, per Warrimoo, will oloae at Masterton, on Saturday. June 16th, at 6.15 a.m. A meeting of the St. Patrick's Ladies' Hookey Club was held in St. Patrick's schoolroom last evening. Mr J. Bradbury occupied the chair. llt was decided that in future the Club should be known as tbe Garry Owflii Club. Two delegates. (Misses V. O'Counell and M. Stempa) were appointed to represent the Club at (the meetings of the Wairarapa Ladies' Hookey Association. Intimation has been conveyed through the local Postmaster to tbe heads of Government Departments that all Government offices are to be closed to-day, and only urgent puolio busiuesa thereafer up to the day of the funeral of the late 'Premier. On the day of the funeral ajl public offices will be dosed for the day. The Post and Telegraph Department will remain open as usual. The Manawata Standard statesthat Mr Ernest Short, of Waitnna, has received advice that the allround average of his consignment of 48 bales of limbs' wool (Romney Marsh) had averaged Is 2)£d neb lb. Four years ago the same class of wool was sold m London at sJ£d. A meeting of the Ladies' Committee in oonneotion with the Star Cricket Club's annual sooial and dance was held in Mr W. B. Ohennells' office lasi evening. details were arranged for the function, which is to be held in the Foresters' Hall on June 21st. Thereis every prospect of the dance being a complete success. At present about a dozen locomotives on the Otago seotion of the railway are using acetylene headlights with mirror reflectors. After two years' trial the lights have proved a success, and the Hillside and Addington shops will be asked to turn out more as soon as the rush of work connected witn the New Zealand Exhibition is over. The Railway Department is substituting brass footwarmers in oarriages for the old pattern of tin. An experimental lot, numbering about 100, is now in use on the Otago seotion. The change is due to complaints made to the effect that the thick coating of rust which quickly i gathered on the old pattern left visible marks on footwear and, i dresses. The transport of 56 colonies of bees for a distance of some thirty miles is a little undertaking one doesn't often see or hear of in these parts. Messrs Bowler Bros., of Matamata, who have of upwards of 200 colonies at their Te Aroha farm, brought about 60 colonies to Matamata. This was done by means of enclosing them in scrim in a waggon and they were; safely landed on their Matamata section in a snug hollow.—Auckland Herald. I The Hon. C. H. Mills, Minister j for Customs, in a recent interview, said the question of a reciprocal agreement to the mutual advantage of Australia and New Zealand, would doubtless be very fully discussed by the Cabinet on the Premier's return, and something definite might be the result. Referring to the duties on produce, the Minister said there could be no question that the ad valorem duty on potatoes was a mistake, and that it should either be. removed altogether or be made adjutsable according to the market prioea. Recently a man named Owen made himself notorious by firing a shot oc two at his employer, Mr Percy Easton, ,at Moutoa, near Foxton, but managed to escape arrest, says a Paimerston North paper. Last week a man, believed to be Owen, was in the vicinity of Moutoa, and an effort was made to effect his oaptare. Mr Peray Easton, armed with a loaded revolver, and his brother went in pursuit. A big chase resulted, but the man got away, the Herad station that Percy Easton fired three shots at him. Owen is said to be possessed of a dangerous looking dagger. x Details of the great race at the Olympia games, from Marathon to Athens, show that Frank (U.S.A.), Dal by (Ireland), ana Blake (Australia) led for more than half the distance. Herring (Canada), however, crept up, running strongly down hill. Near Athens he was paced by a Greek athlete, and bis face was bathed for him with water and alcohol. After this rest, Herring kept well ahead, and, reserving his powers, finished in the most easy style, smilingly replying to every silute. On his arrival at the Stadion he received a terriflo ovation.. Among the innumerable gifts be received were a pair of white gloves and a young lamb. Herring was to reoeive the sum of £2,000 on his return to Canada. Two gentlemen want board and resideuoe in private family. A purse containing money awaits identification at Mr Alpass' bakery. A competent baker wants employment. The Custodian of the Park will be pleased to reoeive gifts of trees and shrubs, also seats for the Park. Messrs Maokay and Whishaw, land agents, advertise particulars of several town and country properties placed in their hands for sale. On Saturday next Mr R. S. Howell will submit at auction in Messrs Heoksher and Co.'s rooms, Perry Street, a quantity of fruit, Hhelfeer and ornamental flowering plants and shrubs. A complete list will be I üblished later. Sinoe the opening hour of the VV.F.C.A. drapery sale, on Saturday morning, the assistants have been' ktpt exceptionally busy, and record business for the two days is reported by the management.
