OTAKI EACES. FIRST DAY. (Special Reporter OTAKI, Juno 4. The Otaki meeting opened to-day. The weather was threatening. There was a large attendance, including a number of peopl3 livm Mast6rton. The racing was good. During the day £8,822 was put through tho totalisator, as against =£5,770 last year. In the Flying Hack thirteen horses went to tho peat. Tha Held was despatched to a cplondid start. To Kainui led for four i'ui longs. As the field drew round the lend Sid Reid brought the Maori owned horse Mataari on the outside, and won comfortably. The Voucher and Tupcno were a dead heat for second place. Th 3 rest of the field were close ao Armaraento was sent out favourite.

The Hurdles produced a field of eight, of which Silverleno was favourite. This was a splendid race, Silveileue coming from nowhere and winning en the post brilliantly. There was a splendid finish between Hokio and Jack Pot foi second place. Silverleue was ridden a splendid race by Pritchard. For the Cup a field of thirteen horses went to the post. Ellerton was fractious. Eventually the field was despatched on good terms, except Ellerton, who was left at the post. Marguerite out out the running for a mile. Lyrist came to the front at the turn, and won wihout whip from Ellerton by two lengths. Black Reynard was a good thiid. The winner is a consistent performer, and is trained by Mr Stewart Waddell. In tho Otaki Hack there were two deflections, Aboriginal and Aeolus. Martello was made a good favourite. Gold Guard also carried considerable money. Cold Guard reared up and was left by twenty lengths at the post. The finish was a splendid one between Reid. on Prospector, and Dave Price, on Silvetlead, tho judge finally calling it a dead heat. IVlarteJlo was a bad third. In the Maiden a field of nine faced the starter, of which Oamnfire, a Oarbine colfc, was made favourite, and after a desperate finish was beaten by the Masterton-trained Pytohely,well handled by Pritchard. A head separated the first and second horses. Kuku wad a length away third. In fthe Rangiuru Handicap a splendid field of seventeen horses went to the barrier. Ailsa was first away to a good start, and was prominent for two furlongs, when Medallist took charge, was never headed, and won by a length from UoDtendofc, who finished well. The winner was well handled rjy George Price. The Birthday Welter needs no description. The field left on even terms. Compass led throughout, and was just beat on the oost, after a good finish, by Montigo, with Pawa a good third. Landwern was a hot favourite.
