ASSESSMENT COURT.

WELLINGTON. May 30. Large numbers of objectors gathered at the sitting of the CJity Assessment Court this morning, and much interest was centred in the proceedings. Most of the valuations showed a large increase, but the Oourt declined to make any reductions. The question of appeal in .several cases has been reserved. The Oourt dedlined to consider whether the return from properties waß in proportion to the assessment, and stated that it was guided by what it considered a fair selling value.
NEW ZEALAND POLICE FORCE.
TRANSFERS AND PROMOTIONS.
WELLINGTON, May 30. The following transfers aud promotions in the Police Force for the colony have been decided:—Sergeant Williams, Auckland, goes to InvercargiJl, vice Sergeant Uowden, who takes charge of the new station at Feilding; Constable Dart, who has been temporarily in charge of the instructing department at Mount Cook depot, Wellington, permanently appointed to that position, and promoted to the rank of Sergeant; Sergeant Higgins, Dunedin, transferred to Lawrence, vice Sergeant Bowman, transferred to Timaru; Sergeant Miller* of Gore, transferred to Masterton, to replaoe Sergeant O'Maliey who retires on a pension; Acting Detective Hollis, of Auckland, promoted to Detective; Constable N, Abbot, of Wellington South, promoted to Sergeant, and transferred to Auokland; Constable J. Foster, of Feilding, promoted to Sergeant, nnd transferred to Dunedin; Constable A. T. Emerson, of Arrowtown, promoted to Sergeant, and goes to Danedin.
