MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
FINANCE COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Finance Committee of tha Masterton County Council was held yesterday morning There were present —-Grs Welch (chairman), Harris, Toognod, Morris, Guild, Warren and Kebbell. The Treasurer reported ag follows: -—General Fund Account, cr., £1,194 8s lOd; Local Bodies Loan account, cr.. £±4s 7s; accounts, cr, £874. 7s 8d receipts for tiie mouth, £565 l4s Bd. Accounts amounting to £1,696 19s 8d were passed for payment. With reference to tue account fur £1 12s '2d, sent in Ijy Mr C. G. Monro, architect, for professional services, a motion by Or Guild that the claim be uot recognised was lost, and it was deoided on the motion of Cr Toogood to reduce the claim to 16s Id. the cost of an extra trip made to Palmerston North by Mr Monro in the interests of the Council. Tha Committee, deoided to support the proposal of the Wairarapa South County with regard to leaving the appointment of Committee Keturning Officers in the hauds of the controlling authority in each licensing district. It w;\s decided to recommend the Council to spend £1 for £1 np to £2O on any sum Mr D. Donald is prepared to Bpend in improving the road giving access to his property at Te Whiti. Crs Harris, Morris, Guild and the Chairman were appointed a Committee to enquire into a ad report on what shed accommodation is necessary on the County office site and the cost thereof. It was decided to recommend the Council to grant J. Reilly, late keeper of the Tawatam Tollgate, £2O out of the surplus tolls as a gratuity for past services. The Engineer was instructed to procure a Tasmania timber jack at a cost of about £2 lUs.
COUNCIL MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council was held yesterday afternoon. There were present—?Crs C. E. Cockburn Hood (Chairman), W. J. Welch, W. Harris, J. Morris, jnr., H. Toogood, D. Guild, Holmes Warren and C. Kebbeli. Mr D. M. McAllister (Waterfalls) wrote complaining of damage done to bis fences by straying pigs and cattle. The letter was received. The Chief En ft iuear of Roads forwarded an Order-in-Council declining MoNaughton's, Makoura, Pori, Puketoi, and MataDihi Roads, County .Roads. An application war received from Messrs Kirk and Clark (Kopuaranga) for a slaughter license.— Granted.
The Treasury notified that the £3,000 loan for the Lansdowne high pressure water supply had be9n provisionally approved of. Mr P. Carr wrote informing , the Council that gravel was being removed from the river-bed near the Kuamahunga Bridge. The Clerk reported that the Engineer bad the matter in band. With reference to the comnlaint that the telephone wires on the private line between Masterton and Gladstone were so low that they obstructed the passage of threshing machine elevators, Mr W. C. Buchanan wrote stating he had made some measurements and ascertained that in certain places the wires were too low, and he would consult with other settlers interested with a view to remedying the defeot. Regarding the Council's by-law stipulating the height of the wires should be 16ft over gateways he stated that when elevators 1 were properly lowered for travelling they were only 14ft from the ground. The writer further stated that a foot more or less did not make much difference, but an additional foot in the length of a pole was a matter of serious consequence, and he was sure that the Council did not wish to unneucesasrily increase the expense of a telpehone communication which was proving of such great value to settlers. The letter was received. A letter from Mr P. Carr complaining of water lying on tbe road in front of his property at Te Ore Ore was referred to the Engineer. Pour alleged breaches of the County wheel tyre by law, two each on the Brancepetb-Taueru Road and Blarlogie Road, were reported. It was further reported that eight carters were using three-inch tyres in carting metal over the County roads for the Castlepoint County Council. ,lt was decided, to take no action in the mattur.
A complaint was lodged by Mr John Darlington as to the state of the Waihoki Road. The letter was received.
Mr Joseph Thompson wrote asking for permission to travel with his trolly and six bullocks between Mr Pilmer's, Taueru, and Te Parae, during tbe month of May. The request was granted.
Messrs J. •H. Tafcham and G. Moore, sen., on behalf of themselves and Messrs Bennett Bros, and J. Fraser, settlers of Uriti, waited on the Council and asked to be allowed to lease a small allotment: of the shipping reserve at Uriti. The matter was considered by the Council, and finally Or Toogood moved "that the Clerk write to the owner of the land adjoining the reserve, asking on what terms he would consent to transferring a piece of land on eaoh side of the reserve to enable the settlers to get aoroßP to the sheds on the shipping reserve." The Chairman ' seconded the motion, wbiah was carried. The meeting then adjourned. i .
