RATING ON THE UNIMPROVED VALUE.
THE MASTERTON COUNTY COUNOIL PETITIONED. A petition, signed by 127 settlers, was received at the meeting of the Masterton County Counoil, yesterday afternoon, asking that the Council take a poll on the question of rating on the unimproved value. The County Clerk reported that be had inspected the signatures in the petition, and had found that eleven had lacked qualification, and this reduced the number of signatures below the required number. Councillors were of opinion that the present was rather a bad time for taking a poll, and they were afraid that, owing to the wet weather, the settlers would not record their votes, and' thus the proposal would be lost. That would mean a loss of about £6O or £ 7 O, and it was the general opinion that the most suitable time to take the poll would be when the election for representatives of the Counoil was being taken. It was rieoided to return the petition to the promoters and point out the facts mentioned above.
