MASTERTON BOROUGH CONNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING.,/ The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Oounoil was held last evening. There were present— The Major, Ore J. JH. Pauling, J. Elliot, F. W. Temple, W. Morris, E. G. Eton, J. 0. Bwineton, E. Feist, E. MnEwen. An apology for absence was reoeived from Or, T. G. Hoar. Philip Wallis wrote stating the terms under which he would give eleven yards of his property for the proposed widening of York Street to one chain. The Mayor stated that satisfactory arrangements had been entered into with all the owners in York Street in oonneotiOQ with the widening of. the street, excepting Mesdamws Tucker and Wishart, and these ladies would be shortly seen on the matter. On the motiion of the Mayor, the offer of Mr Wallla was accepted. A further letter was received from H. R. Wood, setting forth the claims witioh he thought justified the extension of the gas along Renall Street. Prom reports he had read he had noticed that the Gas Manager had stated th,at the service to Kenall Street would not pay. Buildings were going up rapidly in the street, and the Btreet would soon be one of the most populous in the Borough. As moßt of the resident | of the street would take advantage ; of the service, he tboughsttbe extension would pay the Council. The Gas Manager stated that at the present time the extension of the gas along Renall Street would not pay the Council. , The Mayor stated that the Council had no pipes at the present time for the extension work. The letter was referred to the Gas Committee. An application was reoeived from E. S. Richards, custodian of the Reading Room, for an inorease in salary. The application was referred to the Library Committee. The County Clrek wrote requesting the Council to hold over the County Council's request for two street lamps at Lansdowne until the County Council had time to consider the terms under which the Borough Oounoil would ereot the lamps in the locality. A letter was reoeived from the Mangers of the Master ton Technical School asking the Council for a grant of £25 or £3O per annum to cover the cost of lighting and heating of the rooms used for class purposes at the institution, On the motion of Or Feist, the application was referred to the Finance Committee. ' ' { R. Ashton wrote stating that he was|selling bis business to Mr Henderson, and transferring the Contract for keeping the Post Office dock in order to Mr Henderson. Hartmann, Hoar and Permain, wrote agreeing to their land in Cross Street being taken by the Oounoil for the purposes of widening the street, subject to fair valuations on the land and buildings being arranged. A. C. Major wrote drawing the Council's attention to the unsatisfactory condition of the footpath in Hall Street in front of the Age office For several years past the footpath had been inj a bad condition, and should be attended to without delay, owing to the faot that the footpath was used by a large number of persons. The Mayor stated that provision wn«j made for the work in the loan schedule. The meeting then adjourned until Fiiday evening next.
