AN INTERESTING DISCOVERY. Reoeived May 3, 10.52 a.m. SYDNEY, May 3. The Government Geologist has reopived a small diamond in a matrix found near Inverell. It is embedded in a piece of igneous rook, known as dolerite. The disoovery throws some additional light on the question of the origin of diamonds. It Is fair to assume tbat the diamond Was formed while the dolerite was in a cooling or solidifying state, . Until the present discovery the dolerite was quite unknown in the world as a matrix for a diamcnd.
(The origin of diamonds, which consist of pure crystallised carbon, is still a myutery, on which the attempts—only partially successful—to produce them artificially have thrown but little light. Very extraordinary conditions of beat, pressure, and absence of oxygen must have been necessary for their formation, and as they have been repeatedly found enclosed in aerolites the theory has gained some ground that they have been in all oases extra terrestrial in their origin, a notion which formed the baste of a recent popular romance).
