EXTENSION OF GAS MAINS.

.REPORT BY THE GAS MANAGER. Id accordance with instructions received from tbe Manager of the Masterton Gasworks (Mr 0. W. Blackmail) reported as follows to the meeting of tbe Masterton Borough Council last evening with regard to tbo mains proposed to be laid in Cornwall Street, Bunny's .Road (Hogg's Cresueut) and Renall Street:— Proposed gas ruain in Coruwall Street, from the intersection of Chapel Street to tbe intersection of Pownall Street.— Length of proposed main, 35 chains; size of main, three inch C.I. pipe; estimated cost, £2OO. At present there are sixteen bouseß on tbe proposed line of main, and otheis in course of erection. Many of these would undoubtedly become oonaamers, and tbe main should pay well.

The application for a gas service on this line from Mr Parton.—As tbis consumer is only about two chains from tbe end of the existing main, and is prepared to put in a gas cooker as well as lighting, I would recommend that a temporary service be put in, pending the laying cf tbe permanent main. In estimating tbe cost of laying mains 1 have not included the cost of service pipe, and the supply and fixing of a gas meter, which will average fo::u' pounds per house. Gas main proposed to be laid in Hogg's Crt scent from Worksop JRoad to Dixon Street.—Length of main, 28 chains; size of main, three-inch, C.I. pipe; estimated cost, £163 ss. There are at present eleven houses in tbis line of main, of whom the following are prepared to have the gas laid on. viz., Mr King, four houses, and Mr King's residence, Messrs Walton, Collinge and Mcintosh. Mr Chapman will become a customer later on. Tbe laying of this main would also add materially to tbe volume of gas available in Dixon Street, which is at present supplied by one and a quarter-inch and one inch wrought iron sub-main. I would recommend that the main be laid. *£r? '

Gas main proposed to be laid in Renall Street from its intersection with Chapel Street to the intersection of Pownall Street.—Length of proposed main, 41 chains; size of main, three-inch 0.1. pipe; estimated cost, £230. At present there are only five houses on ; the proposed line of main. lam of the opinion that the probable revenue would not warrant the capital expenditure at present. It was decided to hold over consideration of the reports for the present the Gas Manager in the meantime to report as to any requirements in connection with the plant of the gasworks.
