BOROUGH FINANCES.

* A SATISFACTORY YEAR. The Town Clerk submitted to the meeting of the Borough Oounoil, last evening, a comparative statement showing the state of the Borough finances at the commencement and at the end of the financial year, ended March 31st last. The position is as follows:—General Account, 1904-5, dr, £3,348 8s 2d; 1905-6, dr, £2537 lis. Gas Account, 1904-5, or, £4BO 7s lid; 1905-6. or, £679 18s 2d. Library Account, 1901-5, cr, £7 10s 4d; 1905-6, dr, £IOB 2s. Waterworks Account, 1904-5, dr, £217 15s Id; 1905-6, cr, £2OB 15s Bd. Interest Account, drainage, 1904 5, dr, £99 6s lOd; 1905-6, cr, £56 4s Id. Interest Account, Bannister Street, 1904-5, cr, £6O 17s sd; 1905-6, or. £123 12a 3d; Loan Account, drainage. 1904-5, cr, £404 8s sd; 1905 6, cr, £7B 19s sd. Loan Account, abattoir: The abattoir was commenced durin i the year and at the end of the year the account showed a credit balance of £895 15s 8(1. The nett overdraft amounted, at the end of the year 1904-5 to £2,694 14s sd, and at the eud of the year 1905-6 to £1,435 2a lOd. The Mayor congratulated the Couocil on the condition of the finances, and said the result of the year's working was a credit to the Council. Councillors bad shown those whom they r»presented that they were worthy of their support; in fact he thought the present Oounoil had done better than many previous Counoils. He felt proud to sit with such a Council, and the year's results showed conclusively that the Council had done its work well. The borough streets oompared favourably with those of any borough in the colony. Cr Ewington: "The less said about our streets, the better." Or Morris: "They're a standing disgrace to the town!"
