R. G. KNOWLES.
♦ The professional humorist is oredited with being in private life as serious as a judge. Nature must have made a mistake in the case of R. G. Knowles, for on and off the stage he is an entertainment in himself. He possesses just those gifts of wit and humour wnioh Mr T. H. Crosland insists on denying the Irish; displaying those oharaoteristios ia private life which distinguish him on the stage. In speaking he rattles along, introducing dry humourisms, without the least apparent trace of conaoious effort to be funny. /-It will be a surprise to many to learn that Mr Knowles was intended for the ministry. His mother somewhat of a Puritan, thought him cut out for a clergyman. "Yes! My mother was rather strict, and would have nothing to do with the stage. She wanted to make a clergyman of me. I was intended for the ministry," says Mr Knowles. The length of some of the comedian's runs is the best evidenoe of his great popularity. He figured! In the programme of the Tivoli, Lonon, for two years and ten months. He appeared at the Trocadero for 68 weeks; at the Empire he put up a record—he ran for 47 weeks, being 36 weeks longer than anyone had ever done before. His season in South Africa recently terminated, he remarks, was unparalleled even in that oountry. Mr Knowles desoribes his uew entertainment as between the iDusio-hall and the leoture platform, and bridging the ohasm between the two. It will take the form of humorous sketches of travels around the world, illustrated by biograph pictures, and assiited by Mr R. G. Knowles. Mr Knowles promises to take his audience through familiar and unfamliar lauds, remarking on and illustrating interesting and humorous sights and local characteristics. The box plan for the season, opening on Saturday next at the Masterton Town Hall, is now on view at Boilings'.
