ALLEGED HORSE-STEALING.

ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. At the Magistrate's Court, yesterday morning, before Mr W. P. James, S.M., Frank Keeve was charged with the theft of a horse, valued at £lO, the property of Pinfaey Bros., on March 17th, It was alleged that aooused bad obtained the loan of a horse from John Piuhey, for the purpose of riding to Tepurupuru station, where be was to be employed on a fenoing job. Aooused stated that if he could not obtain the horse, he would lose the job. When aooused obtained the horse (whioh was turned out), he said that it would be better oil with him than with Pinhey, as the grass was plentiful at Tepurupuru. When aooused first asked for the loan of the horse he made an offer of £1 10s for it, but the offer was deolined. When accused took the horse away he had no authority to sell it. On Maroh 21st aooused exchanged the horse for a mare, whioh belonged to Robert Jaokson, blacksmith, of Martin borough, the horse being identified as the property of Pinhey Bros. The accused, in bis evidence, stated tbat he arranged to buy the horse for £lO, and iuteuded to pay for it when he received his cheque for the fenoing work, in whioh he was engaged. He afterwards exchanged the horse for Mr Jackson's mare, intending to re-sell the mare, with the idea of profit. Aooused said he was working at Tablelands, not at Tepuruouru, a mistake having been made by Mr Pinhey. When acouEed was arrested at Martinborougb, by Constable Sherry, he had no money, and remarked that it had been stolen from under his pillow at the fish shop, where he had putup at while on a visit to Wellington. The aooused was oommitted for trial at the Supreme Court, Wellington. Bail was allowed In one surety of £IOO, or two of £SO eaoh.
