ISLANDS FOR SALE.

According to an advertisement published in Fiji, Fanning Island and Washington Island are to be sold on the 17th April at Suva by direction of the High Commissioner's Court without reserve. Recently received information states that the pale is merely a private one in settlement of the terms of the wills of the original owners. However this may be, reliable information received states that there will be active bidding on the part of the Germans for Fanning Island. It is stated that they will go to a high figure to obtain possession of the Island. What the object is at present is a mystery.

THE EASTERN CABLE COMPANY.

At the Federal Cabinet meeting a letter was reoeived from the Eastern Extension Cable Compapy intimating that the agreement as amended by the Senate would not be accepted. This means that the oompany's rights to the special privileges it has enjoyed,' one of which is the use of oertain land lines, will oease. The effect of the company's rejection of the Federal proposals will be that the agreement with the States will be reverted to.

THE TORNADO AT SYDNEY.

The tornado, after leaving the heights of North Sydney, passed over the city ac a great elevation without doing damage. - As it passed over the eastern suburbs it liberated immense quantities of leaves, evidently gathered at North Sydney.

DEATH OP A PURSER

Received March 29, 1,5 a.m. SYDNEY, March 28.

Mr John Anderson, a purser on the Manipouri, died of pneumonia, after the vessel arrived from the Islands to-night.
