Some time ago there arrived in Wellington, from Japan, a consignment of handkerchiefs of a texture -so fine and soft that the Customs officials took the material to be silk, and wished to levy duty accordingly. To this the consignee obeoted, declaring that the handkerchiefs were not made of silk, and the matter took a humourous aspect when the Japanese Consul brought evidence to prove that the raw material used was nothing moie nor less than New Zealand flax fibre. Of course the method of manufacture is a close trade secret. All that is known of it is that the process is a chemical one, and that the fibre thus split into threads is so fine that one of them, even when held in a strong bright light, is inrisible. One of these handkerchiefs, is now in the possession of Mr Fulton, the chief grader, who has candidly confessed that he huuself would have been deceived as to the nature of the material, though,, of course, had be seen the fibre, he would have recognised it as our product. From statements made to an Evening Post reporter it would appear that fraudulent practices in connection with tne sale of New Zealand frozen mutton at Home still go merrily on. A gentleman recently returned from London had occasion, while travelling in Sootland, to go into a meat shop in Glasgow where a placard announced that New Zealand mutton was on sale. He asked for 51b of New Zealand chops, and was astounded when he saw the wily butcher advancing towards a lean-looking carcase that would never have been permitted to leave these shores. "That's not New Zealand mutton," observed the newcomer while the butcher worked vigorously with his knife. "Oh, yes, it is," he replied. "Where's the brand?" demanded the customer. That settled the matter. The butcher recognised that he was in a hole, and promptly got himself out of the difficulty by saying he wbb sorry, but bad just discovered that he had no New Zealand meat in stock at that moment. The same thing is going on all over the country, and it is extremely difficult to detect the offenders. The new season's golf goods are now on view at the W.F.O.A. Fanoy Department. Mr A. Norman, draper, anBounoes the arrival of new autumn and winter drapery, and invites inspection. Mr J. L. The latter team were runners up at at the Polo Championship Contest att Chriscchnrch. The game was a fast one, but the heavy nature of the ground interfered with the play of the Whareama team, Wellington won the match by 8 goals to 2 goals. The goals for the Whareama team were scored by Messrs H. and R. Morrison, who both played sterling games. The result of the movement to raise funds in aid of the new Hospital building is of an eminently satisfactory character. The donations received bv the Treasurer direct amount to £487 15s 9d, while the balance from the Floral F«ste amouuts to £239 12s Bd, making a total of £727 8s sd. When the Government subsidy is added to the sum already stated, the Building Fund will have been augmented to the extent of £1,600 6s 6d. The promoters of the movement, when undertaking it, hoped to raise £7OO, thus it will be seen that they have exceeded their highest anticipations. The energetio committee, and the indefatiguable secretaries, Messrs W. M. Easthope and A. Niool, are certainly to be heartily congratulated upon having achieved such a complete success.
