VOLUNTEER NOTES.
The Easter encampments, whioh will extend over several days, are being looked forward to with gieat interest in volunteering ciroles. The No. 2 Battalion of the Wellington Mounted Rifles (Wairarapa), under Major dolton, encamp near Pahiatua, and will include the following corps:—Heretaunga, Wairarapa, Pahiatua, Eketahuna, and Masterton. The No. 5 Battalion of the Wellington Rifle Volunteers (centre or Ruahine) will also parade at Pahiatua, under the oommand of Lieut.j-Colonel Drummond, when the following oorps will take part: —Woodville, Danuevirke. Pahiatua, Masterton, and Greytown. The regulations of the Defenoe Force have been issued in book form. Under the new volunteer regulations an officer is not called upon to undergo an examination until he has served for one year. The examination of Non-Commissioned Officers will be under the, supervision of the officer commanding the distriot, and candidates have to present themselves for examination after six months in their action ranks. A cavalry journal haa just been published under the direotion of Major-General Baden-Powell, C.8., Inspeotor of Cavalry in Great Britain! It is intended for the circulation of information concerning oavalry matters in our own and other armies, and to bring the various | branohes of mounted troops, regular and auxiliary, both at Home and in the Colonies, into closer touch with eaoh other, by .encouraging the development and interchange of ideas.
