WELLINGTON HARBOUR BOARD.
SHORTAGE OF LABOUR. WELLINGTON. Maroh 22. At to-day's meeting of the Harbor Board a letter wae read from the Carriers Union of Employers, oomplaining of the delays oaused by the shortage of labour on the wharves. The Secretary's reply was that quicker despatch couJd not be given with the present accommodation. A member of the Board said that matters in this respeot had reached a very acute stage, and he was convinced that the management of the Board refused to supply sufficient labour to cope with the work. That was false economy, and had resulted in very grevious trouble, oarriers being sometimes unable to get goods for four, five or even seven days. He moved that a committee be appoineed to enquire into the matter. The Secretary said that the whole secret of the matter was that the sheds were too small for the work. The accommodation at the Queen's Wharf was utterly insufficient. The motion to set up a committee of enquiry was agreed to.
