• MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Masterton School Committee was held last evening, the members present bei.ag Mesira R. Brown (chairman), W. A. Fendall, G. Townsend, H. O'Leary, E. H. Waddington, J. Heyl hoe, J. Carpenter, E. Pragnell, and Rev. D. J. Murray. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £59. The Trust Lands Trust, Chamber of Commerce, and A. and P. Association wrote notifying the Committee that sub-committees had beea appointed to work in conjunction with the School Committee in the formation of agricultural classes in connection with the District High School. J Messrs Heyhoe, Waddington, O'Leary. Carpenter, and the Rev. Murray were appointed a committee to enquire into the matter of school-cleaning, and report to the next meeting of the committee. A letter was received from the Wellington fflucation Board refusing to grant a subsidy in connection with the installation of fire , apparatus at the school. The committee decided to write to the Minister of Education drawing bis , attention to the matter, and stating that the Committee was willing to pay half the cost. It was also decided to Rsk the Minister for his cooperation. The headmaster's report stated, inter alia:— Attendance Main School: Roll, 654; average attendance, 607; percentage of attendance, 93. Side Sohool: Roll, 177; average attendance, 162; percentage of. attendance, 92. Secondary Classes: Roll 75; average attendance 72; percentage of attendance 96. The attendance for the month had been exceptionally good and high percentages of attendance had been recorded in all three departments. Miss Fay Hogg had commenced duty as a pupil teacher. Mr Burns, first assistant, had been appointed as headmaster of the Carterton Sohool, and would retire fromjthe staff at the end of the month. Miss Smith, pupil teacher, will also retire at the end of this month. He was sorry to lose the services of Mr Burns, who had been on the staff upwards of nine years and whose work with his olass had been marked with great zeal and success. Miss Smith had acquitted herself very creditably during her pupil teaohership. She would, be fully expected, speedily obtain an appointment as au assistant in some other school. The additional new rooms would make necessary a revision of the caretaker's duties and salary. The extra work would be about equal to the work at the Side School. It would probably be found advantageous to employ a seoond caretaker for the Side School. Ho very much regretted the delay that, had occurred in o.mneofciou with the asphalting. Until that work was done, the new rooms could not be used. He understood the Borough Engineer had undertaken to carry out the, .work and to put it in band at once. The new furniture was on board the Perthshire, oue ou the 20th inst. It was deoided tp go on. with the work of asphalting the paths at the main school at once. In connection with this matter a letter was received from the Education Board offering 10s for every £1 spent on the work by the Committee. This offer the Committee thought inadequate, and decided to renew their application to the Board to expend half the amount required to carry out the work. The recommendation of Miss Ethel Williams by the Education Board, as a pupil, teacher at the Masterton Sohool, was confirmed. Accounts amounting to £8 13s 7d were passed for payment. Messrs O'Leary, and Heyhoe and the Rev. Mur-iay are the visiting members.
