MASTERTON LICENSING ELECTION.
The election of the Licensing Committee of five members for the Masterton district, was held yesterday, when the polling was fairly brisk ut the Masterton booth. In some of the country districts very little interest was taken in the election. At Waterfalls, for instance, only one vote was recorded, that being In favour of Mr Pauling, while at Grassendale and Kangitumau not a sincle vote was recorded. The results, as sooa as received, were posted up outside of the Age office, a fairly large crowd present evincing considerable interest in the results. About 7 o'clock the Mastertou reBult came to hand, and the other returns followed quickly. The Returning Officer (Mr W. Gillespie) had all the arrangements complete, and is to be congratulated upon the care and expedition with which he discharged his duties. The complete results were to hand by 8.15 o'clock, when ic was seen that rhe successful candidates were:—Messrs McEwen, Hessey. Dnuiell, Tnrnor and Bright, or that the "old" Committee had been re-elected. v At the election in 1003 the, polling resulted:—Messrs Jo!m Hessey 725, E. McEwen 710. C. K. Dau'iell 687, F. C. Turner G7B, F. J. Brisht 055, D. J. Murray 643, T. Wagg 634, J. Dawson 505, W. Pragnell 471, J. Cross 291, T, Brown 215, E. Smith 201. In 1900 tbo votes secured by the successful candidates were:— Messrs E. McEwen 1»5. J. Hessey 772, T. Waetr 763, F. C. Tumor 753, P. J. Bright 735. The unsuccessful candidates were: E. Feist 573. Pragnell, 525, Chisbolm 524, Anderson 519, and Moss 518. The following is a list of the returns.
